As the first step, it is important to demystify the myths associated with hypnosis. The client must realize that hypnosis is not what they have seen in movie or stage show.
There are two aspects of mind: conscious or unconscious.
The conscious part of mind is to direct our voluntary action in responding to what we perceive from the external environment with our five senses.
The unconscious par of the mind not only acts through autonomic nervous system but also undoubtedly controls it either by inhibition or excitation. The unconscious mind controls the various functions of the body outside of consciousness, all the semi-voluntary and involuntary actions of the organs, glands, and muscles.
In the ordinary state of the mind the conscious part of mind is active in the foreground, and the unconscious part active in the background. But in hypnosis, this position is reversed. The result is that the conscious and unconscious mind are combined and the unconscious mind become dominant.
That said, every hypnosis is self-hypnosis. Client you will hear everything and client will be in total control because conscious mind is still working even though it is not in dominant role.
A simple experiment will be helpful for the client to demystify hypnosis.
