Mild
Acute onset trauma: very little swelling, sharp pain of short duration, little or no loss of function. Sprain – little or no loss of stability or range of motion. Strain – little or no loss of strength or range of motion.
Chronic onset trauma: phase 1 – pain after activity, no loss of function.
Moderate
Acute onset trauma: noticeable or market swelling, sharp pain of long duration, noticeable pain or marked loss of function. Sprain – loss of stability and range of motion. Strain – loss of strength and range of motion.
Chronic onset trauma: phase 2 – pain during and after activity, no significant loss of function. Phase 3 – pain during and after activity, noticeable loss of function.
Severe
Acute onset trauma: Immediate and profuse swelling, sharp pain with short duration, noticeable pain develops later, severe loss of function. Sprain – unstable with little or no range of motion. Strain – marked loss of strength with little or no range of motion.
Chronic onset trauma: phase 4 – pain at all times, significant loss of function.
